Bob Andy tribute concert

Jamaican singer and songwriter Bob Andy is best known to many as one half of the duo Bob & Marcia who had a big hit single many years ago with the Nina Simone song ‘Young, Gifted and Black’. Marcia Griffiths also found fame as one of Bob Marley’s backing singers while Bob Andy continued his path as a prolific songwriter and solo artist. His album Songbook, recorded at the legendary Studio One, is a reggae classic. Now 67, Andy has been in poor health lately and a tribute concert featuring many artists is planned to go ahead next Friday (28th) in Kingston.

Back in April 1994 I met Bob Andy for an interview in Osaka before his performance at a reggae festival there. I probably asked him lots of naive questions about Jamaican music but he was enormously helpful and talked generously about the early days of reggae and various other topics concerning his life and Jamaican music. He came across as extremely knowledgable and articulate and our talk remains one of the most rewarding interviews I’ve done. Below is a photo I took at the time.

All proceeds from next Friday’s concert will benefit Bob Andy’s medical care and the Bob Andy Songwriting Foundation.

Thank you, John, for introducing me to another great, soulful singer from Jamaica. As a big fan of Nina Simone and Bob Marley, I appreciate and enjoy reading this short article.
One question: Which album do you recommend me starting with?

    • His best album is probably Songbook. There are also two compilations which are good places to start. One is called Fire Burning and is on the Trojan label. It also has his Young, Gifted and Black with Marcia Griffiths. The other is Retrospective which is on his own label I-Anka. Glad you have discovered Bob Andy!
