Summer in Okinawa

The long hot summer is in full swing here on Okinawa. Last weekend we drove to the north of the island at the invitation of Ryukyu Underground’s Keith Gordon and stayed overnight with him and his family at their home in Motobu. The mountainous scenery there is quite a contrast to the generally flat landscapes of the south. We enjoyed a relaxing time which included a walk to the secluded river nearby and a trip to the beach the next day. Many thanks to the Gordon family for their great hospitality. Back in the south on Sunday evening there was still time to catch the later stages of the Itoman Furusato Matsuri – a popular two day summer festival held annually in the city of Itoman. The festival included the traditional eisa dancing and drumming by local groups and ended with a firework display.  Some photos from the weekend:
