A trip to the north of Okinawa

Okinawa is not just an island of blue seas and white beaches. This week we spent two days on a trip to the north which is an area of forests and mountains quite different from our home in the south. On Thursday we drove up to the area known as Yanbaru and did some walking in Kunigami village around Mount Yonaha. Then on Friday we visited the village of Nakijin and saw the castle ruins. Nakijin castle dates back to the 13th century and the remains were registered as a World Heritage site in 2000. The view from the site is impressive as it looks over Nakijin and out to the sea although the weather was overcast and cloudy on our visit.
