Senaga Island

Senaga-jima is a small island attached by a bridge to Okinawa’s main island. It’s part of the Tomigusuku area just south of Naha and is close to Naha airport. On our visit today it was chilly and overcast but several visitors – tourists and Okinawans alike – were out taking photos and observing the planes which fly over the island on their way to and from Naha airport. Plane-spotting seems to be a major reason for visiting Senaga but there were also a number of people fishing in the sea and the island is well-known for its bird life.

There are no houses and Senaga appears to be uninhabited except for one or two small shops and places to eat. However, in February 2013 a resort hotel was opened and this building dominates the island’s landscape. Senaga is a popular place to visit with easy access from the main island. Staying there for any length of time might be another matter with the constant noise from aircraft.

I used to often cycle here with my children and sometimes swim, and visited the island by bike again by myself this month. It is within a 20 minute bike-ride from my house which is also near the airport.
