Vissel Kobe FC in Okinawa

Earlier this week I was contacted by an old friend, Shigetoshi Hasebe. Several years ago he and I were occasional drinking partners in Kobe when I was living in the city and he was a player for J.League soccer club Vissel Kobe. Since retiring as a footballer Shige has returned to the city and is now a coach at Vissel Kobe who are currently celebrating promotion back to J1.

Shige and his team arrived in Okinawa for a pre-season training camp this week and have been staying at the Southern Beach Hotel in Itoman. Yesterday they played a practice match in Kin Town against the island’s team FC Ryukyu. The weather here has been warm and sunny all week with the temperature at 24 degrees for yesterday’s match. The team will leave Okinawa today. Not surprisingly, the island is a popular venue for pre-season training camps. Another Kansai team, Cerezo Osaka, are also in Okinawa for pre-season training.
