Itoman Hare 2014

Today was the annual Itoman Hare or dragon boat race. The hare (hari or haarii elsewhere in Okinawa) was introduced to the southern fishing port of Itoman from China at the end of the 14th century. It is a fishing festival held to pray for a good catch and a safe voyage at sea.

It’s still the rainy season in Okinawa and much of the day was cloudy and overcast but several thousand people, including us, turned out for this very popular people’s festival and had a good time eating, drinking and watching the races.
